78, of Jacksonville

Shirley Dugger Rodgers, 78, of Jacksonville died June 8, 2011 at Shands of University of Florida Hospital.

Mrs. Rodgers was the daughter of the late John Daniel and Mattie Harvey Dugger and resided in Jacksonville the past 50 years. She attended the 103rd Street Church of God in Jacksonville and was a cashier with Winn-Dixie for 20 years. She enjoyed playing cards and loved to do crossword puzzles. She loved her family very much.

Survivors include her husband of 60 years, George B. Rodgers; daughter Gail (Bill) Riddell, Amelia Island; son Billy (Betty) Rodgers, Keystone Heights; brother Junior Dugger of Macclenny; grandchildren Alison (Scott) Everill, Will (Christina) Riddell, Erin (Luke) Carter, Zachary Rodgers, Rebekah Lynn Rodgers, Michael and Tyler; five great grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mrs. Rodgers was held on June 14 at 10:00 am at the Christian Fellowship Temple with the Rev. James Rodgers officiating. Interment followed at Woodlawn Cemetery. Guerry Funeral Home in Macclenny was in charge of arrangments.

WW II Veteran

Franklin Edward Clyatt Sr., 83, of Lake City passed away Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at Lake Shore Hospital in Lake City. Mr. Clyatt was born in Providence, FL to the late Brewster and Louise Fralick Clyatt and lived all of his life in Lake City. He was a veteran of the United States Army Air Corps during World War II, serving in the European Theatre.

Mr. Clyatt enjoyed fishing and watching the Dallas Cowboys. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, the American Legion and Hopeful Baptist Church, which he loved attending. Mr. Clyatt was preceded in death by his wife Martha Jean Clyatt in 2001.

He is survived by son Franklin E. Clyatt, Jr. (Lynn), Wheaton, Maryland; daughters Debra Johnson (John Thomas), Macclenny and Linda Jones (Chris), Lake City; brothers Ivan Clyatt and Charles Clyatt (Janice), both of Lake City, and David Clyatt (Brenda), Jacksonville; sisters Nancy Chauncey (Stanley), Yvonne Petty (Zimmie) and Marylou Daniels (Lewis), all of Lake City; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

The funeral service for Mr. Clyatt was held June 10 in the chapel of Guerry Funeral Home with Dr. Rodney Baker, pastor of Hopeful Baptist Church, officiating. Interment followed at Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Elgin Barnes, 85,
decorated war vet

Elgin J.R. Barnes, 85, of Macclenny died June 7, 2011 at the V.A. Medical Center Lake City.

Mr. Barnes was a lifelong resident of Macclenny and the son of the late Lynn Adair and Effie Mae Thrift Barnes. He was preceded in death by his brother Elmer L. Barnes.

Mr. Barnes was a decorated Army veteran of World War II and a charter member of the WW II Museum in New Orleans. He was awarded the American French Legion of Honor, knighted as Chevalier of the French Legion of Honor, a lifetime member of the Veteran of Foreign Wars (VFW), life member of the Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 772, Lake City, Florida. He was wounded in France after D-Day and awarded the Purple Heart.

Mr. Barnes was also a member of the Spear-Huxford Genealogy Society and a life member of the Baker County Historical Society. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Macclenny and a former president and member of the Macedonia Cemetery Association.

Survivors include his wife of sixty-three years, Dorothy Barnes of Macclenny; daughter Amelia Ann Barnes (Kurt) Kraus of Macclenny; sons Gregory L. Barnes, Martinsville, LA., Ward P. (Mary) Barnes, Wake, Virginia and Patrick T. (Marta) Barnes of Macclenny; sister Barbara Jean (Randolph) Chisholm of Macclenny.

The funeral service for Mr. Barnes was held on June 10, 2011 at 10:00 am at his church with the Rev. Tom Pope officiating. Interment followed at Macedonia Cemetery. Guerry Fun­­eral Home of Macclenny was in charge of arrangements.

Kay Ashford, 64,
onetime resident

Kay Ashford, 64, of St. Petersburg, Florida died June 11, 2011. She  was born in Wildwood, FL to the late Wallace Lou Ashford and Naomi Twiss Ashford on October 4, 1946. She was a resident of Baker County from 1965 to 2003 and a Mormon. Kay enjoyed cooking and spending time with her family.

Survivors include her sisters: Fay Ashford Herrin of Ocala, FL, Delia Crowe of Tavares, FL and Virginia Casburn of Tavares, FL.

The family will hold a private memorial service at a later date. Ferreira Funeral Services of Mac­­clenny was in charge of arrangements.
