The state attorney’s office intends to file charges against a Glen St. Mary woman for leaving the scene after her vehicle struck and killed an 18-month-old child on CR 127 near Cuyler the evening of January 26.

Based on an investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol, the state alleges that Valorie Ferdon, 56, continued southbound on 127 after her 2001 Honda struck Autumn S. Smith, who was standing on or near the pavement after leaving a nearby residence about 6:20 pm.

Ms. Ferdon is also charged with driving without a valid license during an accident resulting in death or serious injury. Both counts are felonies.

The child’s grandmother Lana Hunter said the Honda was on a road shoulder when it struck Autumn, who was standing away from the pavement.

Ms. Ferdon, questioned by police later that evening, insisted she did not see the child or strike her with the right front of her vehicle.
