George Crawford, 61, of Macclenny was seriously injured when a vehicle struck his motorized wheelchair as it traveled north on SR 228 just north of Barber Road about 6:15 pm on November 16.

Anne Manning, 33, of Glen St. Mary was at the wheel of the northbound 1998 Chevrolet Silverado that hit the wheelchair’s left rear, ejecting the victim onto the northbound shoulder, according to the Florida Highway Patrol’s report.

Ms. Manning and other passengers in the truck were not injured in the accident.

Mr. Crawford was flown to Shands Jacksonville in serious condition. He was piloting a 2005 Jet 3 motorized wheelchair that sustained an estimated $1000 in damage.

FHP Trooper J. Ford’s indicated charges are pending further investigation.

Pedestrians often walk to and from the Macclenny Walmart at the southwest corner of Barber Road and SR 228, traversing a roughly 1 mile stretch on S. SR 228 without sidewalks.

The City of Macclenny’s assistant city manager Roger Yarbrough said the city has made requests to the Florida Department of Transportation for sidewalks on SR 228 S. and widening the road to four lanes.

The department’s Five Year Work Program shows $44,000 has been allocated in 2012 for preliminary engineering for a .08-mile section of sidewalk from Lowder to Barber Road.
