Industrial land use sought on 300 acres in Sanderson E-mail

Thousands of pine trees in an area near Sanderson in western Baker County, located near railroad tracks and two major highways, could be replaced one day by a manufacturing plant, warehouse, mining operation or some other business employing hundreds of people.

At least, that’s what is intended in a proposal to amend the county’s long-range comprehensive plan to change the future land use designation on 300 acres from agriculture to industrial.

The Baker County Land Planning Agency, an appointed panel that reviews land use and zoning applications, endorsed the proposed change during a meeting on the evening of February 14 and sent it on to the county commission for consideration.

Ed Preston, the county’s planning and zoning director, told the board that the proposal, known as a “large scale future land use amendment,” had met the unanimous approval of the development review committee comprised of various county department heads, and his staff also recommended approval.

No specific development plans have been drawn up, nor are any known developers interested in the site at the moment, Mr. Preston said. Or, if there are, he said, “they haven’t told me about it.”

A smoldering electrical fire under the hood of a 1995 Buick Century erupted while being hauled on a tow truck heading through Macclenny the morning of February 6.

The driver was heading north on S. 5th St. near Minnesota Avenue when black smoke began bellowing from the vehicle’s engine.

Another truck driver Derek Tippins was trailing the first and used a fire extinguisher to quell the flames enough for the tow truck driver to unhook the burning vehicle and remove it from the truck.

Nobody was injured in the fire but the Buick was completely destroyed.

Seven firefighters from the City of Macclenny used 650 gallons of water to fully extinguish the blaze, which had engulfed the front of the vehicle.

The nearly three-year-old criminal case against a City of Macclenny computer technician for predatory sexual activities with minor females came to a close on February 6 when he pleaded no contest to a charge of simple battery on one of them back in March, 2002.

Marshall Mann, 48, was acquitted in a jury trial last October of felony sexual battery and lewd acts on another young victim. The state attorney’s office last month downgraded the sole remaining pending count against him to battery, and transferred the case to county court.

County Judge Joey Williams refused a defense request to withhold adjudication of guilt during last week’s hearing, ignoring Mr. Mann’s denial that he touched the victim in a sexual manner.

The judge termed the defendant’s actions “intentional and sinister.”

“You’re in a pickle,” asserted the judge. “You’ve told the court and community ‘I’m not denying what I’m accused of.’ That’s a big thing. What you’re accused of is a heinous misdemeanor.”

TEXT, EMAIL SERVICES AVAILABLE FOR TEENS WITH SEXUAL HEALTH QUESTIONS

A new resource was recently launched for teens in the region with questions about sexual health. It's the BrdzNBz NE Florida text message system.

BrdsNBz NE Florida gives confidential, medically-accurate answers to sexual health questions via text message for teens 12-18 years old Baker, Duval, Nassau, Clay and St. Johns counties. The service is anonymous, provides real-time responses and it's free, though standard text message rates may apply.

A similar resource from Healthy Baker, Inc. is available online at the non profit's Oustpoken website called Ask Aunt Cathy. It's been available for more than a year. Teens can submit any health-related question by filling out the online form and receive a response from a public health professional by e-mail.

To use the BrdzNBz NE Florida service, teens can text NEFLTeen to 66746 to opt-in to the service and then submit their question. Health educators with more than 40 years of combined public health experience respond to questions within 24 hours.

Question topics submitted to the text line include sexually transmitted diseases, HIV, sex, relationships and contraception. Teens can ask follow-up questions and receive referrals to local resources.
